Adaptable Similarity Search in 3-D Spatial Database Systems

For modern database applications such as multimedia, molecular biology, medical imaging and CAD/CAM, similarity search is an increasingly important task. Several user-adaptable similarity models are introduced that demonstrate the wide applicability of quadratic form distance functions. Efficient algorithms are developed in order to support complex similarity search for the resulting new query type, the ellipsoid query. Thorough analyses as well as extensive experiments on large image and 3-D protein databases reveal a good performance of the new methods even for high-dimensional feature spaces.
