Each parasite is characterised by the size of its relevant life cycle stages, by its definitive and intermediate hosts, by its location in or on the host, by the symptoms it causes, by its route of transmission, and by its geographic distribution. This kind of comprehensive information is usually not found in common parasitology textbooks. In addition, for micropredators, i.e. temporary ectoparasites, which have a significant role as vectors for the spread of viral, bacterial or parasitic diseases, information on pathogens transmitted and on hosts affected is provided.
